ANOC embraced the annual United Nations-led IDSDP celebrations today, recognising the unique position sport is in to contribute towards global development and peace.
On 23 August 2013, 6 April was declared by the United Nations as the IDSDP, as a way to promote the global recognition of sport’s universality, and its power to inspire social change and a culture of peace. Due to sport’s vast reach, unparalleled popularity and foundation of positive values, it is the ideal platform to drive the United Nations’ objectives for development and peace.
Discussing the annual celebration, ANOC President Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah said:
“ANOC are fully supportive of the United Nation’s excellent International Day of Sport for Development and Peace initiative. It is vitally important to keep on raising awareness of the fact that sport has a unique ability to positively influence social change and we encourage all our NOCs to do that. Through a collaborative global effort sport will continue to contribute to the advancement of human rights, peace-building, and social and economic development. Today marks the important recognition of the progress that has been made so far, all over the world.”
